Sikh Wedding- Anand Karaj in Hindi, Punjabi and it's meaning in English

Anand Karaj

The families and friends of both the bride and groom gather in the Gurdwara, or a wedding hall, for the 'Anand Karaj' a Sikh marriage ceremony. Wedding parties and guests assemble together in the presence of the Guru Granth Sahib. Hymns are sung as men and boys sit on one side of a central isle, and the woman and girls on the other. Every one sits on the floor reverently with legs crossed and folded.

The bride and groom bow before the Guru Granth Sahib, and then sit side by side at the front of the hall. The couple and their parents stand up to signify that they have given their consent for the wedding to take place. Every one else remains seated while a Sikh offers Ardas, a prayer for the success of the marriage.

The musicians, who are called ragis, sit on a lower stage and sing the hymn, "Keeta Loree-ai Kaam", to seek God's blessing and to convey a message that a successful marital union is achieved through grace.

Union of Two Souls

The husband is to love and respect his wife, encourage her with kind consideration, recognize her individuality, regard her as his equal, offering guidance and support.

The wife is to show her love and respect with loyalty, support her husband's objectives willingly, harmonize with him, and share in happiness and sorrow, prosperity or adversity.

The couple are to ally themselves with each other in an endeavor to achieve a harmonious union, intellectually, emotionally, physically, materially and spiritually.

The Bride and groom, affirm the acceptance of their marital obligations, and bow together before the Guru Granth. The bride sits to the left of the groom directly in front of the Guru Granth.

The bride's father (or one acting in his stead) takes the left end of the palla and arranges it over the bride's shoulder and gives her the left end to hold.

The entire congregation sings "Anand Sahib", the "Song of Bliss". The hymn emphasizes the fusing of two souls into one as they merge with the divine.

Conclusion

The ragis sing two hymns to complete the ceremony:

"Veeahu Hoa Mere Babula" - celebrates the marriage of the couple and their union with God.

"Pooree Asa Jee Mansaa Mere Raam" - describes the happiness at having found the perfect partner.

Every one stands for the final prayer. After it has been said, everyone bows, and resumes sitting.

A Sikh reads a random verse called a hukam which concludes the ceremony. Lastly, a ragi serves everyone a handful of prashad, a sacred sweet blessed during the prayer.

The married couple and their families, express thanks to all present for taking part in the celebration. The wedding party guests congratulate the married couple. Everyone gathers in the langar hall to eat. Parents distribute boxed confections such as ladoo to guests.

In India, the Anand Marriage Act was promulgated during British times in 1909 by great efforts of Maharaja Ripudaman Singh of Nabha State who got it drafted by Bhai Kahn Singh Nabha, but was not adopted at the time of framing of the Constitution of Independent India. Now Anand Marriage Amendment Act 2012 has been adopted by the Government of India and Sikhs can now register their marriages.

Dara Singh and my connection

Dara Singh a legend born as Deedar Singh Randhawa in 1928 has passed away. He was such a household name so popular that every kid who was healthy, strong and good looking was called and even named after him. He attained highest levels in the fields of sports, entertainment, and politics. He was above all such a humble soul and true gentleman who will not tolerate even an iota of indecenncy himself nor allow any body else to misbehave in his presence. He was Indian Ideal of goodness through strength and a straightforward persona.

There was tremendous awe registered in the minds of people, who had his picture of King Kong lifted in his arms over his shoulders as 'The Signature Style of Dara Singh'. This move was famously known as 'The Indian Deathlock'. He had almost thrown King Kong out of the Arena. Whenever he was fighting in the ring, it was as if India was fighting China, England, America or any other foreign country. People used to throng the arenas like mountain of mad crowds waiting only for his victory. Such was the Charisma that he became bigger than wrestling itself.

Although the truth is, as we now know, that all professional wrestling all over the world is fixed as a sports entertainment. But being an ardent fan of Dara Singh, I feel devastated by his passing away. On the other hand I have sense of satisfaction and pleasure by the onslaught of emotion and affection evoked globally.

I am pleased to unravel a personal connection with Dara Singh. Harvinder as a toddler was very healthy, good looking and strong infant and hence all in her family started calling her Dara Singh and eventually nick named her Dari. Most of us even today affectionately address her as Dari.

My childhood superhero, Dara Singh! Rest In Peace.

A treat to watch elderly dancing and having fun

It was a treat indeed to watch Dr TS Khanna and Dr Jogi Khanna, a couple with +50 Years of married life singing and dancing thus enjoying the victory over the arduous battlefield of their lives. Khannas kicked off the dancing by holding hands-in-hands and making timely maneuvers and swinging their bodies synchronously together to the Bollywood tunes of 1960-70-80s.

We were welcomed by their son-in-law at the door, a nice gesture which raised the stature of the party. It was an excellent get together of about 100 people to enjoy the music, drinks and ambience in mild climate of San Francisco Bay Area. The evening was well set with meticulously laid out tables and chairs in the back drop of meadows on the wooden decks of their big house in Alamo, CA. The whole yard was lit up with sprawled beautiful and decorative lights.

The roses of multiple colors from red to pink to white to light pink to yellow were at their blossom best. The yellow roses were crowning over all other colors. All the bushes, creepers and various magnificent variety of plants were well manicured and dressed up in the best presentable conditions.

Being new comers, we were very well doctrined by Khannas to gel in with the people already enjoying the party and made us comfortable. The daughter of the house was seen loaded with the responsibility of overall arrangements.

The live band played variety of film songs uninterrupted for four hours. Most of the guests enjoyed the songs and danced to some fast pop numbers. Dancing was spearheaded by Khanna couple, the hero and heroine of the night.

Above all the Khannas proved to be en excellent hosts.

Gurdwara Nanak Darbar Dubai

Gurdwara in Dubai is making waves. Shiv sent me a note on this. But my friend Balbir Singh Sahni sent me more details which I am producing below. Built at $20 million, the ultra-modern gurdwara is a rare piece of architectural design, a blend of modern and traditional building style, finalised after studying important Sikh shrines the world over, including Golden Temple.

Harvinder has already plans to break journey in Dubai on our next trip to India in late this year. So are ready Shilpy and Shiv who have their chicago buddies Vali and Heina located in Dubai. Come winter 2012, and we 'inshallah' will be having a gala time intercepted by spiritual time.

Visitors say that it is even more beautiful than the Golden Temple of Amritsar. The only Gurdwara of its kind in the modern world, some are even comparing Kandhari to erstwhile kings, who made such iconic monuments of importance during their rule. A beautiful fact in religious harmony, when he brings home historic significance that the foundation stone of the Golden Temple was laid by Muslim Saint Hazrat Mian Mir and land donated now by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai. Large part of the 65 million dirham spent on making it has been spared by Kandhari himself. Heavenly spirituality meets with earthly opulence. A spectacular combine made possible by the will of God, through his chosen man, Surinder Singh Kandhari.

It was a journey to the unknown when Mr. Kandhari, a well-respected businessman in Dubai, approached Dubai authorities with his, what is calls, "a dream project." Convincing the officials of the Ministry of Islamic Affair that there is nothing anti-Islamic about setting up a Gurdwara, was the most difficult job.

Mr. Kandhari, who is also the Captain of the prestigious Emirates Golf Club in Dubai, needed to bring all his convincing powers and knowledge about the region into full play - and finally he succeeded. "It was hard to explain the Ministry officials even the idea of sangat and langar. I had to translate excerpts from Guru Granth Saheb and read out to them. Sikhs don't worship idols like in Islam, and how the idea of equality was inherent in Sikhism. Once they were convinced that setting up a Gurdwara is not anti-Islamic, things quickly started falling in place.

His HIghness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Makhtoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of UAE, was very gracious to grant permission for building of the gurudwara. "The permission is one thing, look at gesture- he gave us 25400 square feet of land free for the community!"

From 24 carat gold canopies to exclusive Italian marble, the temple of worship is a masterpiece in architecture, aesthetics & grandeur, all in the name of God. The serenity as you enter is just the same as one would find in any other place of worship. But behind the faith lies six years of toil and treasure spending in what stands as an icon of Sikhism in the Middle East . Situated in Jebel Ali, a prominent location, measuring 100, 000 sq ft spread across four levels, it is visited by hundreds of devotees from across the globe.

The building contractor has guaranteed the structure for 100 years. It has high sped silent lifts. The kitchen is made & manned to five star standards. "I told the ruler that one can't surpass the Golden Temple but what we will have is the most modern Gurdwara in the world" said Kandhari, chairman of the Al Dobowi Group, and one of the most prominent NRI’s in the Middle East . The community box collections are already very high which pleases the management as they plan to spend it all in binding the Indian – Pakistan community closer. The next steps unveil opening of hospitals & schools for public good, as well as teaching native languages and religious strictures.

"JO BOLE SO NIHAL, SAT SRI AKAL".
