Shaving Kit

One day a guest came to meet a neighbor of us when we were living in Qulander Chowk, Panipat. The visitor happened to be a Sikh gentleman.

The neighbor Uncle was very social  friendly and also close to my Dad. The guest due to some reasons had to stay overnight in his house.

Next day early morning, uncle sent one of his kids to our house. She knocked at the door and asked for loaning Shaving kit from my Dad. At first he was simply shocked to get such an odd request. Why a small kid was asking a shaving kit from a practicing Sikh.

Hair Fixer, Hair Brush, Neares Cloth and  a Needle Support

But a good sence prevailed upon my Dad to understand what little kid meant was. He went straight to his vanity and after collecting his beared setting tools like hair fixer, hair brush, beared cloth etc handed over to the little kid.

My Dad came to know later that the guest in fact had forgotten to bring his beard  fixing tools usually required by Sikhs with fully grown beareds. The poor neighbor was so much embarrassed to know all this and profusely apologized from my Dad.

Definitely my Dad understood the real meaning of Shaving kit and repeatedly narrated this story to kids.

Serving Peaches In The Gurdwara

As a matter of principle I would love to pass values to my next Gen. With this in view I requested for a help from Shiv to do some service to humanity. I know he is usually very busy taking urgent calls during weekdays, while he likes to unwind himself by getting lazy on weekends.

This Sunday, I told him to pick some Peaches from our back yard tree for serving them in our Gurdwara. He took upon himself willingly to pick the biggest and the ripest peaches immediately. Our peaches are out of this world and are as big as Alphanso mangoes with sweetness and devinity of their own.

General Harkirat Veer ji visiting his daughter Shilpy, agrees with me when we enjoy this ripened fruit early in the morning. Well appropriately cooled juices overspill from every bite we make. The overnight cool temperature of the valley makes the fruit more yummy. Veer Ji also endorses the fact that the referigerated peaches from the cold storages in the market are no match to the nature cold fruit of our back yard.
So I felt that it would be more appropriate to take this fruit to the Sunday Gurdwara for our Sangat to share & enjoy the produce. Hence with Shiv's help we picked a few of them, washed them and wiped each of them. The lot was properly placed in a basket to be presented as a part of Langar.

I was feeling proud that our fellow Sangat would be delighted to taste this unique quality of home grown organic food. So we placed the basket at the start of the dishes so that the Sangat would get the opportunity to grab it first.

But to my utter surprise, when I got my turn to be served, I felt no body had opted for the peaches. There were so many appetizers like Pakoras, Besan Burfi, Fruit chart, Gulab Jaman, Gajak and sweetened Rooh-Afza milk etc that our fellow Sangat were preferring to eat. All these items were contributions from fellow worshippers. The worshippers were naturally preferring better and tasty items.

My ego was hurt and in the process It lead me to learn a lesson. While I had misconception that my contribution would surpass any other item brought by everybody else. Guru has his own intentions and ways. The Sangat reaction forced me to think with a deep breath and another thought kept me just grounded. I must understand that I was not the only contributer and my contribution was no way superior to any one. Rather my contribution was minimal as compared to all others.

I learned that I have to be humble at all the times, both in my words and deeds.

Thanks Baba Ji.

'Assmannu Utri' Dadi Ji

Our Dadi Ji Karam Devi was a very jovial person. She was the one who used to narrate us the bed time stories on Sikh Religion and Punjab Folklore.

She would also sing poetry in the praise of Guru Gobind Singh Ji and Guru Nank Dev Ji. Usually her story telling was in the shape of poetry singing.

When we boys were growing in late teens, she would make some funny self made poetry to tease us the kids. Me and my cousin Roop were the usual targets.

Whenever I visited Chandigarh on my summer vacations, she framed a beautiful two liner on me and used to sing it now and then. The lines were as follows:

"Assmannu Utri ill Ve,
Ve Preetmohana!
Chandigarh vich Tera Kehri Kudi Te Dill Ve."

"Assmannu Utraia Kaan Ve,
Ve Preetmohana!
Tu Jaldi Kar De Haan Ve"

And there was continuous renderings by each one of us by composing similar poems for hours targeting each others.

Huge laughter followed after every rendering. In her absence, my age mate cousins Manorma and Roop would tease me by repeating these lines again and again and some more similar funny lines of their own.

I had no option but to retaliate in the same fashion by substituting my name with theirs. Dadi Ji gave us an excellent reason to enjoy life without any present day electronic gadgetry.

We miss you Dadi Ji!

Vitamin D Watch

In a casual talk with my nephew Dr Sandeep Singh Kapoor, I just happened to mention about certain weakness and pains in my knee joints while getting up. He could understand my problem and asked me to get my Vitamin D tested. This test has been only recently introduced in the year 2000. As my levels came out low and I have been put on Vitamin D dietary supplements of 2000 units everyday. For the benefit of all in general and older people in particular, I am reproducing an interesting article below:

Imagine there were a nutrient that could protect your bones, brain and heart, and maybe even help you live longer. It's 100 percent free, and all you have to do to get it is go outside. Seems like something everyone would have plenty of, right? Well, that nutrient exists -- it's vitamin D, which is created by our cells when our skin is exposed to sunlight. But despite these facts, many Americans aren't getting as much of the "sunshine vitamin" as they should. Here's what you need to know about vitamin D, and how inadequate levels can affect your health.

Vitamin D is a nutrient found in some foods that is needed for health and to maintain strong bones. It does so by helping the body absorb calcium (one of bone's main building blocks) from food and supplements. People who get too little vitamin D may develop soft, thin, and brittle bones, a condition known as rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults.

Vitamin D is important to the body in many other ways as well. Muscles need it to move, for example, nerves need it to carry messages between the brain and every body part, and the immune system needs vitamin D to fight off invading bacteria and viruses. Together with calcium, vitamin D also helps protect older adults from osteoporosis. Vitamin D is found in cells throughout the body.

How much vitamin D do I need?

The amount of vitamin D you need each day depends on your age. Average daily recommended amounts from the Food and Nutrition Board (a national group of experts) for different ages are listed below in International Units (IU):

Life Stage Recommended Amount

Birth to 12 months 400 IU

Children 1–13 years 600 IU

Teens 14–18 years 600 IU

Adults 19–70 years 600 IU

Adults 71 years and older 800 IU

Pregnant and breastfeeding women 600 IU

What foods provide vitamin D?

Very few foods naturally have vitamin D. Fortified foods provide most of the vitamin D in American diets.

Fatty fish such as salmon, tuna, and mackerel are among the best sources.

Beef liver, cheese, and egg yolks provide small amounts.

Mushrooms provide some vitamin D. In some mushrooms that are newly available in stores, the vitamin D content is being boosted by exposing these mushrooms to ultraviolet light.

Almost all of the U.S. milk supply is fortified with 400 IU of vitamin D per quart. But foods made from milk, like cheese and ice cream, are usually not fortified.

Vitamin D is added to many breakfast cereals and to some brands of orange juice, yogurt, margarine, and soy beverages; check the labels.

Can I get vitamin D from the sun?

The body makes vitamin D when skin is directly exposed to the sun, and most people meet at least some of their vitamin D needs this way. Skin exposed to sunshine indoors through a window will not produce vitamin D. Cloudy days, shade, and having dark-colored skin also cut down on the amount of vitamin D the skin makes.

However, despite the importance of the sun to vitamin D synthesis, it is prudent to limit exposure of skin to sunlight in order to lower the risk for skin cancer. When out in the sun for more than a few minutes, wear protective clothing and apply sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) of 8 or more. Tanning beds also cause the skin to make vitamin D, but pose similar risks for skin cancer.

People who avoid the sun or who cover their bodies with sunscreen or clothing should include good sources of vitamin D in their diets or take a supplement. Recommended intakes of vitamin D are set on the assumption of little sun exposure.

What kinds of vitamin D dietary supplements are available?

Vitamin D is found in supplements (and fortified foods) in two different forms: D2 (ergocalciferol) and D3 (cholecalciferol). Both increase vitamin D in the blood.

Am I getting enough vitamin D?

Because vitamin D can come from sun, food, and supplements, the best measure of one's vitamin D status is blood levels of a form known as 25-hydroxyvitamin D. Levels are described in either nanomoles per liter (nmol/L) or nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL), where 1 nmol/L = 0.4 ng/mL.

In general, levels below 30 nmol/L (12 ng/mL) are too low for bone or overall health, and levels above 125 nmol/L (50 ng/mL) are probably too high. Levels of 50 nmol/L or above (20 ng/mL or above) are sufficient for most people.

By these measures, some Americans are vitamin D deficient and almost no one has levels that are too high. In general, young people have higher blood levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D than older people and males have higher levels than females. By race, non-Hispanic blacks tend to have the lowest levels and non-Hispanic whites the highest. The majority of Americans have blood levels lower than 75 nmol/L (30 ng/mL).

Certain other groups may not get enough vitamin D:

Breastfed infants, since human milk is a poor source of the nutrient. Breastfed infants should be given a supplement of 400 IU of vitamin D each day.

Older adults, since their skin doesn't make vitamin D when exposed to sunlight as efficiently as when they were young, and their kidneys are less able to convert vitamin D to its active form.

People with dark skin, because their skin has less ability to produce vitamin D from the sun.

People with disorders such as Crohn's disease or celiac disease who don't handle fat properly, because vitamin D needs fat to be absorbed.

Obese people, because their body fat binds to some vitamin D and prevents it from getting into the blood.

What happens if I don't get enough vitamin D?

People can become deficient in vitamin D because they don't consume enough or absorb enough from food, their exposure to sunlight is limited, or their kidneys cannot convert vitamin D to its active form in the body. In children, vitamin D deficiency causes rickets, where the bones become soft and bend. It's a rare disease but still occurs, especially among African American infants and children. In adults, vitamin D deficiency leads to osteomalacia, causing bone pain and muscle weakness.

What are some effects of vitamin D on health?

Vitamin D is being studied for its possible connections to several diseases and medical problems, including diabetes, hypertension, and autoimmune conditions such as multiple sclerosis. Two of them discussed below are bone disorders and some types of cancer.

Bone disorders

As they get older, millions of people (mostly women, but men too) develop, or are at risk of, osteoporosis, where bones become fragile and may fracture if one falls. It is one consequence of not getting enough calcium and vitamin D over the long term. Supplements of both vitamin D3 (at 700–800 IU/day) and calcium (500–1,200 mg/day) have been shown to reduce the risk of bone loss and fractures in elderly people aged 62–85 years. Men and women should talk with their health care providers about their needs for vitamin D (and calcium) as part of an overall plan to prevent or treat osteoporosis.

Cancer

Some studies suggest that vitamin D may protect against colon cancer and perhaps even cancers of the prostate and breast. But higher levels of vitamin D in the blood have also been linked to higher rates of pancreatic cancer. At this time, it's too early to say whether low vitamin D status increases cancer risk and whether higher levels protect or even increase risk in some people.

Can vitamin D be harmful?

Yes, when amounts in the blood become too high. Signs of toxicity include nausea, vomiting, poor appetite, constipation, weakness, and weight loss. And by raising blood levels of calcium, too much vitamin D can cause confusion, disorientation, and problems with heart rhythm. Excess vitamin D can also damage the kidneys.

The safe upper limit for vitamin D is 1,000 to 1,500 IU/day for infants, 2,500 to 3,000 IU/day for children 1-8 years, and 4,000 IU/day for children 9 years and older, adults, and pregnant and lactating teens and women. Vitamin D toxicity almost always occurs from overuse of supplements. Excessive sun exposure doesn't cause vitamin D poisoning because the body limits the amount of this vitamin it produces.

Are there any interactions with vitamin D that I should know about?

Like most dietary supplements, vitamin D may interact or interfere with other medicines or supplements you might be taking. Here are several examples:

Prednisone and other corticosteroid medicines to reduce inflammation impair how the body handles vitamin D, which leads to lower calcium absorption and loss of bone over time.

Both the weight-loss drug orlistat (brand names Xenical® and Alli®) and the cholesterol-lowering drug cholestyramine (brand names Questran®, LoCholest®, and Prevalite®) can reduce the absorption of vitamin D and other fat-soluble vitamins (A, E, and K).

Both phenobarbital and phenytoin (brand name Dilantin®), used to prevent and control epileptic seizures, increase the breakdown of vitamin D and reduce calcium absorption.

Tell your doctor, pharmacist, and other health care providers about any dietary supplements and medicines you take. They can tell you if those dietary supplements might interact or interfere with your prescription or over-the-counter medicines, or if the medicines might interfere with how your body absorbs, uses, or breaks down nutrients.

Vitamin D and healthful eating

People should get most of their nutrients from food, advises the federal government's Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Foods contain vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber and other substances that benefit health. Dietary supplements might help in some situations to increase the intake of a specific vitamin or mineral. For more information on building a healthy diet, refer to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's food guidance system, ChooseMyPlate.

Visit to Gurdev's Home

It was about 20 years back that I was introduced to Gurdev Hora by his business assistant. We instantly clicked together. Being a spiritually inclined, Gurdev was my natural ally. We also did a few common business deals and hence his honored wife Gud also came close to us too.

On one of his business trip to San Jose, Gurdev came all the way from Sacramento to stay over night in our house to attend an early morning TIE inaugural meeting in 1996. That was the beginning of close and dedicated relation with two families. Inspite of big age difference between us, we bonded well.

Shiv was invited to Sacramento Gurdwara Sahib for assisting a music session to prepare for a Hemkunt Gurbaani Competition after Ajooni-Ardaas and their team had been declared  number one in the tough Regional contest recently. They were now preparing strenously for their next round. The kids are presenting on the composition produced by Shiv and were,  therefore, thrilled to get nuances from the original composer. We wish them good luck.

We have been to Gurdev Gud's home on couple of occasions. This time the home was filled with lot more beautiful household articles but hustle and bustle of the kids made the house reverberating with more rejoicings and happiness. The kids are growing nicely under the able supervision of their parents was evidently visible as they mixed up together very harmoniously. Gobind went GaGa with the warmth of kids. While a few minutes back he was pushing to go back home, soon he was begging for more time to spend with them.

Thanks Hora family for warm hospitality.

How Nihal misses Gobind

Summer Vacations have been typical for Gobind & Jania as there are no schedule trips to vacation parks this year. Nor there is any usual trip to India. All of us have stuck to our home during the summer.

But above all, God has blessed them with a sibling Geet. They are dancing and playing around her day in and day out. Besides lot of friends and relations have been dropping in to meet Geet and Shilpy.

My niece Jasleen's husband Hardeep presently in Gainesviley, Florida, planned an urgent trip to Bay Area in connection with his job. He offered his older son Nihal also to accompany him so that he can meet his buddy Gobind. Nihal was thrilled to top of the world to get this glorious opportunity.

The news initiated flashes of facetime exchanges between Florida and California. Gobind was too curious and excited to see virtual Nihal ready for their famous hug in Shrwood Ct. The bond between Gobind and Nihal had been very strong right from the days they were toddlers. The bondness has been ever on the increase. Sometimes we feel that they had some special bond connection even in their previous birth.

When it was all set to leave for San Francisco, Hardeep got some urgent official emergency to cancel the trip. This caused tremendous disappointment between the two families. Gobind and Nihal were almost crying but resorted to long FaceTime communications.

The irony was that finally Hardeep had to make a trip alone. This made Gobind and Nihal very sad. Today I checked up with my niece Jasleen, how was Nihal copping up with such a  situation. She gave me a very startling message. Nihal was so much frustrated that he resorted to take computer help. He went to Google and searched for Sherwood Ct and took a virtual flight from Gainsville systematically mapping the route and going along with it to San Ramon. He consistently gazed at Sherwood Ct if he could see his best friend and Cousin Gobind playing in his backyard. Poor Nihal could see the backyard of Gobind's house, but could not see Gobind.

I am just astonished to learn how this small kid Nihal is missing his cousin sitting at a distance of 3000 miles. He is  trying to make up his helplessness in his own way. He got an amazing solution to cool down his frustration. Who knows Nihal may think upon a solution to feel his buddy realtime and give him a feeling of a distant tight hug to him in the very near future.

Nihal has shown exemplary thoughtfulness to find solution above. He is proving to be a Wizard kid. I am sure he will continue to use his similar sharp brain in a positive way in his life.
