The Orange Tree and little Geet

The First Orange

Nov 2014 in its Second year of replanting.

In the corner of our yard stood a young orange tree, its slender branches mirroring the tender newness of our six-month-old Geet. We have been strolling along and watching a lone first ever fruit on our orange tree replanted only two years back. One crisp morning, as we strolled with Geet in Harvinder’s arms, we spotted this tree’s first fruit—a single, glowing orange.

With care, I plucked it and handed it to Harvinder to feed Geet. Her tiny fingers grasped it eagerly, her eyes wide with wonder at its bright color and smooth texture. Harvinder predded the small orange and squeezed into her mouth and she started sucking it instantly.a small piece.

Geet’s reaction was unforgettable. Her face scrunched at the tangy taste, then lit up with a gummy smile, followed by a joyous laugh. She waved the orange triumphantly, babbling as though she already claimed it as her own.

As the orange tree stands now.

Though she won’t remember this moment, we always will—the day our youngest shared a milestone with the youngest tree, both symbols of growth, joy, and life’s simplest gifts.

Palm Trees at Sherwood

On Nov 9, 2013

In 2006, when we purchased the Sherwood house, it marked the beginning of a new chapter in our lives. To commemorate this milestone after we had settled down, we planted two palm trees—one in the front yard and another in the backyard. These trees, symbols of growth and resilience, have stood as silent witnesses to the passage of time.

My fascination with tall palm trees began much earlier. In 2000, at our earlier home in San Jose, we planted a cluster of three palm trees. Watching them grow and sway gracefully in the wind instilled a deep appreciation for their beauty and strength. When we moved to Sherwood, I wanted to carry this connection forward, planting the two palms that now feel like a part of our family.

Over the years, as our family grew and flourished, so did the palm trees. Their once-slender trunks have now matured, and their canopies stretch high, providing iconic status to our home. Much like our children, who were young and full of promise back then, the palms have weathered seasons of change, growing stronger with each passing year.

  Back-yard Guard

Today, these majestic palms stand tall and proud, like steadfast security guards watching over our home. The one in the front yard greets every visitor with a stately presence, while the one in the backyard ensures a sense of quiet protection from behind.

On 28th Nov 2024, two Palms snapped in the above frame stand majestic.

The palms have become a living metaphor for our family’s journey. They remind us of the roots we planted together, the care we’ve poured into nurturing them, and the beauty that arises when growth is steady and purposeful. As our children continue to thrive and reach new heights, the palms stand tall, guarding our home as symbols of strength, resilience, and the enduring legacy of our family.

Gobind meets his soul mate

This Thanksgiving, our home is filled with gratitude and warmth as we celebrate the spirit of family and friendship. On the eve of Thanksgiving, we welcome Gobind and his “brother,” Shashvat Iyer, into our home. Tradition carries on in a beautiful, evolving way.

Shashvat, a Tamil Brahmin by origin, doesn’t speak Tamil, and Gobind, our own, speaks only Sat Sri Akal in Punjabi. Yet, these two young men have forged a bond that transcends language and culture. Both are pursuing double majors in Pure Mathematics and Computer Science, and their shared journey has transformed friendship into brotherhood.

When I snapped a picture of the two of them, Gobind hugged Shashvat and said, “He is not my friend; he is my brother.” Such words reflect the true essence of Thanksgiving — unity, love, and gratitude.

Tonight, as tradition meets innovation, we are improvising the classic Thanksgiving dinner with a Tofu Turkey. It’s a reminder that family isn’t just those we are born to, but those we choose along the way.

To Gobind and Shashvat, may your bond continue to inspire all of us to celebrate diversity, togetherness, and the enduring power of friendship.

Happy Thanksgiving!

With love,

A Proud Grandfather

Living Gracefully in the Golden Years

On my grand-daughter’s graduation party

As I grow older, I’ve come to realize that staying physically, mentally, and spiritually active is the key to leading a fulfilling life.

In our Baba ji room

Each day begins with a mix of physical exercise, meditation, and yoga to energize my body and calm my mind. After a refreshing shower, I tie a neatly freshly washed turban, choosing a different color each day.

Dressing in clean, tidy, and well-washed clothes—even if they are not expensive—brings me a sense of discipline and pride.

Well washed and stacked

Taking care of oneself is a vital part of maintaining dignity in old age. I strive to do my chores independently, such as washing, folding, and organizing my laundry. While I don’t cook often, I contribute by helping my wife chop vegetables or by doing my own dishes.

My wife Harvinder prepares delicious homemade vegetarian meals, a tradition we value deeply. Grocery shopping is another joint effort; I accompany her to load, unload, and neatly stack the groceries.

Family is central to my life, and I stay connected with my grandchildren by helping with school pickups or sharing driving duties when we visit them at their colleges.

A warm hug, near the Starbucks Coffee shop, with my grandson Gobind after a gap of a few weeks makes me happiest.

Going to the nearby beaches along with kiddos keep me busy and fresh

These moments of togetherness keep my heart young. On stormy or extreme weather days, we sometimes indulge in window shopping at malls—not so much for shopping but for the joy of spending time together.

This also helps me fulfill my doctor’s recommendation to walk for at least 30 minutes a day.

Offerings to the lotus feet of Jagat Guru

Every Sunday, visiting the Gurdwara is a sacred ritual for us. It keeps us grounded spiritually and offers an opportunity to connect with the community.

With our neighbors

Social functions, when personally invited, are another way to stay engaged, although I am mindful not to become a burden on my children. Instead, I believe in leading a self-reliant life, offering support rather than seeking it.

In quieter moments, I enjoy listening to music and watching sports, which keep me entertained and inspired.

Writing my blogs

Writing has become an integral part of my daily routine. Over time, I’ve noticed that people tire of listening to repetitive stories, so I channel my energy into documenting my personal history through blogs. It’s a meaningful pursuit, helping me preserve memories for future generations while offering me creative satisfaction.

I enjoy singing with my son Shivpreet which keeps me connected and bonded.

Another essential aspect of aging gracefully is keeping track of one’s assets. While I’m not overly aggressive about it, I ensure that everything is in order to avoid unnecessary stress for my family.

My Medicine cabinet

Following my doctor’s advice, I take my prescribed medicines religiously—quite a handful in my case—and carefully monitor my blood pressure and blood sugar levels, recording them daily in my diary. Staying on top of these health priorities gives me peace of mind.

Aging is not just about managing routines but about embracing the changes that come with time. It’s about finding joy in small, meaningful moments—sharing laughter with loved ones, watching the sunrise, or offering a helping hand to my neighbors. By keeping the mind active, the body healthy, and the spirit grounded, one can live an old age full of purpose, grace, and contentment.

Being a lifelong vegetarian and teetotaler has never extinguished my desire to enjoy the goodies of the Western world. From savoring diverse cuisines within my dietary choices to embracing the cultural and technological advancements around me,

Travels to far and near are absolutely rewarding

Memorable trip to Sedona in Swear weather when we were trapped in heavy snow for 14 hours

I’ve found ways to balance tradition with modernity. Life, after all, is about cherishing experiences while staying true to one’s values—living with purpose, grace, and a never-ending curiosity for all that the world has to offer.

Village festival, Palm Springs California

In the heart of California’s desert oasis, Palm Springs offers a lively mix of cultural events, local markets, and a bustling downtown scene that captures the unique spirit of the region—a place that resonates with the journeys I’ve taken, discovering vibrant communities and treasured experiences around the world.

Downtown Palm Springs offers a vibrant and lively atmosphere, especially with events like VillageFest every Thursday evening. During VillageFest, Palm Canyon Drive transforms into a pedestrian-only street fair, stretching from Indian Canyon Drive to Belardo Road.

This popular event features a diverse mix of local vendors, food stalls, live music, and artisan crafts, making it a must-visit for locals and visitors alike.

Located within a 100-mile radius, vendors bring in a variety of fruits, vegetables, and unique goods that highlight the best of the region’s agriculture.

For those seeking a more permanent experience in the area, Downtown Palm Springs serves as the city’s cultural and social hub, filled with art galleries, boutique shops, and top-notch dining options. It’s the perfect spot for anyone wanting to be at the heart of Palm Springs’ vibrant atmosphere.
