Cappadocia, located in central Turkey, is renowned for its unique and otherworldly landscapes, which have been sculpted by natural forces over millions of years. The most iconic features of this region are the fairy chimneys, also known as hoodoos or fairy rocks. These peculiar rock formations have captivated travelers and geologists alike for generations.

The fairy chimneys in Cappadocia are the result of volcanic activity and erosion. Around 60 million years ago, the region was covered by a volcanic layer of ash, tuff, and basalt. Over time, wind and water eroded this soft volcanic rock, creating the stunning cone-shaped formations we see today.
We had to walk and climb as Harvinder wanted to touch the rocks to get a feel that it was not a dream.

What makes Cappadocia's fairy chimneys even more unique is the softness of the tuff rock. This allowed ancient civilizations to carve intricate cave dwellings, churches, and underground cities into these formations. Some of these caves served as homes for early Christians fleeing persecution in the Roman Empire.
Gurpal specially flew to Istanbul from San Francisco and joined us for Cappadocia leg of the trip.
Visiting Cappadocia's fairy chimneys is a journey through both time and nature, offering a glimpse into the Earth's geological history and the resilience of ancient civilizations that once called these remarkable formations home.
