Mohan Sachdeva

After more than fifty years of friendship, we found ourselves juggling careers, marriages, and raising children, often all at the same time. He migrated in 1980, just after the Vietnam draft was withdrawn; I followed in 1988.

It was all destiny.

We were very different by nature, he enjoyed life in his own way, while I chose a quieter, more disciplined path, being a teetotaler from a Bhagat family. Yet those differences never mattered; if anything, they made our friendship richer.

We had planned to travel together in March 2025, to Mumbai and Goa. He was already in India, but his health would not allow him to endure the arduous journey any further.

He left us after fighting like a brave man—enduring open-heart surgeries and surviving a rare cancer. Through it all, the love remained constant. We loved each other deeply and stayed true buddies to the very end.

I still don’t know why, in 2017, when he was confronting cancer, he asked his wife Neelam to call me and ask me to pray for him. Perhaps he sensed something deeper. Knowing his character, it was no surprise that he faced those adverse conditions with courage—and overcame them.

Ajit Ketkar Joins For dinner

Shiv, Shilpy, Madhu, Ajit outside the Mylapore restaurant in San Ramon Ca.

We had been looking forward to a pleasant dinner while waiting for Shiv’s friend, Ajit Ketkar. He arrived with his wife, Madhu, whose warmth and friendly nature immediately put everyone at ease. Meeting Ajit after nearly a decade and a half felt truly special.

Chicago Booth School of Business

The first time I saw Ajit was at the graduation ceremony at the Booth School of Business, University of Chicago, when Shiv was completing his MBA after two rigorous years of study. I remember noticing a smart, cheerful young man sitting across the aisle, chatting animatedly with friends. Curious, I asked Shiv, “Who is he? Do you know him?” Shiv smiled and said, “Yes, he’s my good friend.” When I asked if he was Shiv’s classmate, he explained that Ajit was actually his senior and had come especially to meet his close friends who were graduating that year, in 2002.

The people walking near The Magnificent Mile, Chicago.

That occasion, too, concluded with a celebratory dinner at one of Chicago’s finest restaurants near ‘The Magnificent Mile’, joined by Anubhav, his wife Jalpa, Mannu Seth, Ali, Suresh, Mukul Sharma his wife Abha and other colleagues, an evening full of warmth and camaraderie.

Having dinner together, Punjabi food missed though! Incidentally, the chef was a Sikh gentleman from a village near my own. He went out of his way to prepare a few special dishes, not even listed in the Menu card, which were brought straight from the oven and served piping hot by Punjabi waiters, adding a delightful personal and cultural touch to the entire evening. The Chef and his team rightly deserved a nice tip showing our gesture of Thanks.

Yesterday felt like a natural continuation of that bond. After lively discussions and plenty of good-humored banter, we decided to go out for dinner at Mylapore, a South Indian restaurant in the East Bay renowned for its excellent food. The dinner was truly sumptuous - Vadas, Idlis, and three or four varieties of dosas, all shared among us. Madhu, ever so friendly and cheerful, enjoyed the spread wholeheartedly, adding to the joy of the evening.

In spite of the many ups and downs and the inevitable turmoil of life, Ajit, handsome with his light-colored eyes, remains in his usual jolly spirit. Over the years, he has grown into a fine, middle-aged man with a charismatic personality that reflects both maturity and charm.

A Flower Friendship Bouquet!

We, the Kapoors, wholeheartedly wish them a long and glorious life, marked by continued success in business. Above all, we also wish them a deep & enduring sense of contentment and fulfillment towards life and each other.

Spending time with a friend like Ajit, who takes precious time out of his busy life to reconnect and revive old friendships, was deeply heartwarming. It was an evening to be remembered.

Geet Fabulous Art Work

Geet Kapoor with her Art

“I started by folding the petals using a tutorial I found online. After that, I glued each petal individually and curled the edges to give them a more elegant, decorative look. Once the circular structure was ready, I turned it inside out so it resembled real flower petals. For the center, I cut up a tube of yellow paper and placed it in the middle.”

Grandpa appreciates the Art work and Grandma snaps a shot.

“When asked how I chose the colors, pink and yellow. I explained that these were simply the only flower-like colors left in my origami set. In nature, flowers come in almost every color imaginable; really, any color can exist as a flower.”

Beautiful Flower Art

“I was also asked whether I enjoyed the process, and I did. It took me about an hour to an hour and a half to complete the flower.”

All the best to you, Geet!

Thank you. You did a great Jib.

Jo Mange Thakur by Shivpreet Singh playing on Loop in Gurdwara Bangla Sahib

As my sister Tripat, along with her daughter Simer and her grand-daughter Kudrat, visited Gurudwara Bangla Sahib in the evening, they parked their car in the area reserved for devotees and proceeded toward the elevator to reach the upper level on their way to the Gurdwara.

To their pleasant surprise, the shabad “Jo Maange Thakur Apne Se”, sung by Shivpreet Singh, was playing on loop inside the elevator.  My niece Simer made a special effort to stay back and catch the clip of the shabad, and soon her mother and children joined in. Right there in the elevator, they began singing along, turning those few moments into a spontaneous and deeply moving kirtan experience.

Hearing this sacred shabad even before entering the shrine of Guru Har Krishan Sahib Ji filled their hearts with joy and devotion. It felt deeply humbling to encounter familiar kirtan at such a revered place, even before bowing at the Darbar.

In a quiet and beautiful way, every devotee arriving there is guided by shabad to prepare the mind before entering the sanctum. This moment felt like a living expression of Naam flowing naturally ‘aap japai, avarā nām japāvai’.(you meditate and have others meditate too)

I thank Babaji for blessing our Shivpreet Singh with the opportunity to spread Waheguru’s Naam in its truest sense, by singing Gurbani that reaches hearts far and wide. May Babaji keep him grounded in humility and grant him the strength to continue serving humanity through these sacred shabads.

The attached video, viewed by over five million people, stands as a testimony to how Gurbani, when sung with devotion, finds its own divine path.
