In search of an enjoyable outdoor adventure amidst the stunning weather, we embarked on a quest to find a hiking trail in the Tahoe area. Our search led us to discover the exquisite Van Sickle Bi-State Park, a public recreation area situated on the California-Nevada border.
Nestled overlooking the pristine waters of Lake Tahoe, this park not only offers breathtaking views but also commemorates the legacy of Henry Van Sickle, a pivotal figure in the establishment of Genoa and its surrounding regions. Managed jointly by the Nevada Division of State Parks and the California Tahoe Conservancy, Van Sickle Bi-State Park boasts an array of hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding trails for visitors to explore.
Exploring Nature's Splendor:
As we ventured into the park, we were captivated by the abundant flora and fauna that enveloped the serene landscape. The tranquil atmosphere provided the perfect setting for an idyllic escape.
During our journey, we had the pleasure of meeting a fellow hiker from our city, accompanied by her friendly canine companion. She kindly shared with us a lead to a border road marker, adding an extra layer of intrigue to our adventure.
Enchanting Campsite at 6280 ft:
At an elevation of 6280 feet, we discovered a picturesque campsite, complete with the usual amenities such as tables and barbeque facilities. The scenic views and serene surroundings made it an ideal spot to unwind and immerse ourselves in the beauty of nature. As we set up camp, we relished in the anticipation of the unforgettable experiences that awaited us.
The American Desi Hand-Pump:
One of the most pleasant surprises during our exploration was the encounter with a unique hand-pump. We instantly dubbed it the "American Desi Hand-Pump." Intrigued by its design and functionality, we delved into further research to uncover its fascinating details and how it remains freeze-resistant in all weather conditions.
Model M-75-BD4: A Year-Round Hydrant:
Our investigation revealed that the hand-pump in question is known as Model M-75-BD4, a post hydrant specifically engineered for year-round usage in freezing or inclement weather conditions. With a burial depth of 4 feet, this freeze-resistant unit ensures a continuous water supply. By extending below the ground's surface, the supply inlet is strategically positioned at or below the frost line. The inlet features a union connection, while the stock, top, and base are crafted from durable, one-piece iron castings, finished with a high-quality oil-based green enamel. Furthermore, the inner supply assembly incorporates solid-brass castings, and the nozzle, threaded for a 3/4" hose connection, is also made of solid brass. The handle, made from a single iron casting, boasts the same sturdy green enamel finish. Operated by a turn handle, the valve allows for convenient control of water flow. Moreover, when the valve is shut off, water is gravity-evacuated from the inner supply column. It is worth noting that all waterways within the hydrant utilize lead-free castings, adhering to ASTM standards B61 and B62.
