Suanjana Returns to Our Fields
Harvinder feels excited to touch the young Suanjana tree in May 2026
Suanjana, or Moringa, has always been a favorite in our family. My father invariably kept a tree in our fields. Its flowers were cooked fresh, while the excess were sun-dried for winter. The long drumsticks were used in soups and, most memorably, added to mango pickle, making it wonderfully juicy, sour and tasty.
Over time, our old tree disappeared, and I had been asking for another to be planted. Last year we finally planted one, and it has already grown nearly thirty feet tall. Hopefully, by next April it will give us flowers and drumsticks.

Now in Oct 2026
Harvinder is already looking forward to drying the flowers and once again making our traditional dishes and mango pickle.
It is heartwarming to see Suanjana back in our fields, reviving the tastes and memories of my parents and our old family traditions.
