Visit to Interlaken Switzerland in March 2002

Anyone who wishes to become acquainted with the most picturesque facet of the Alpine world quickly realises one thing - seeing the Summit at first hand is a must.

Interlaken is located at 570 m (1,870 ft) above sea level, between Lake Brienz to the east andLake Thun to the west in the area called Bödeli. The town takes its name from its geographical position between the lakes (in Latin inter lacus). The Aar river flows through the town connecting the lakes, whilst the Lütschine river flows from the mountains to the south. We reserved our rooms right at the corner of the connecting rivers. Spending a night here was a night spent in haven. As we came out of our lodge in the morning, we were welcome by friendly white flemangoes all around. Being an animal lover Shilpy's joy knew no bounds and was seen communicating and playing with them very intimately.

We drove to the interior of the summit at Europe's highest train station (the peak is called "Sphinx"), it was a bright sunny day. A lift takes visitors to the peak with its observatory and the famous observation platform, from which one has a magnificent view of the mountains and the Aletsch Glacier. The Jungfrau-Aletsch region with its unique plant and animal world is the first Unesco World Natural Heritage Site in the entire Alpine region. Further sights include the Ice Palace, the Ski and Snowboard Park and the glacier restaurant "Top of Europe". We were lucky to get some fresh Salad, bread, Coke and a fresh brewed cup of Coffee at reasonable prices. Having visited earlier along with his business school batch mates, Shiv was handy enough to suggest food of our liking.

We went to Mahraja Indian Restaurant in the evening for the dinner. We were thrilled to see a small but decent Indian restaurant. The service was excellent. The person waiting on our table told us that the owner of the restaurant belonged to Delhi. We were all very excited to exchange a few words with him. On seeing us he started talking in Punjabi. He was sort of very busy at that time and wanted us to meet him again. The food served was freshly cooked, oven hot and smelled with familiar herbs. To top it all the bread was cooked on Tandoori oven and freshly served one by one. The overall high cost did not bother us.  We were so satisfied to get your own familiar food in a remote corner on the Top of the snowy mountains - the world famous Alps.
