Rafting In The River Sutlej in Dec 2012

It is a good sunny wintry day in mid of Dec 2012. We decided to visit Tattapani at a distance of 43 Km from our Whispering Pines Resort in Mashobra. We took a taxi driver whose family also owns a grocery shop in the neighborhood and hence we thought he was a reliable one. The journey starts with a first halt at Naldhera which boasts of an oldest 9 hole beautiful Golf course in the country. The journey was downwards but very pleasing going through valley and medium size hills. we were at times traveling parallel to the river Sutlej route.

Being wonderful and perfect day for  river-rafting, River Sutlej in this area is the excellent location for new comers to enjoy rafting. River Sutlej is the longest of the five rivers of Punjab that flow through the historic crossroads region of Punjab in northeren India and Pakistan. It was having 30 ft deep water presently and in peak the depth of water may reach more than 100 ft. It is the eastern most tributary of the Indus River.

The rafting point started from a place upstream at Sunni. We rafted with pleasure and ease mainly due to a team led by highly experienced Nepali leader who was very fluent in English. We only confronted rough waters at 3-4 times, one time both of us were badly drenched by the splash of ice cold waters throwing a wave of shock full of thrill and excitement in us.

After rafting for about six Kilometers, we terminated our rafting journey at Tattapani where we saw and touched famous hot sulphur spring waters. it was amazing to see hot waters getting merged with ice cold waters of Sutlej River. Sutlej is flowing all the way from Tibet to Himachal to Punjab feeding water and Power to the whole of Northern Region via several Major Hydel Projects including Bhakra Dam 1000MW, Karcham Wangtu 1200 MW and its downstream Nathpa Jhakri 1500 MW before going to Pakistan and finally merging with Indian Ocean through Indus river.

We also witnessed Gold mining in progress along side the river. Lots of kids were seen having fun with hot water springs.

We also halted on our way at Regional Horticulture Research Station Mashobra, specializing in Apple, Pear and Cherry trees for dense cultivation. We wished we could bring a few samples for our back yard.
Emotionally, I was able to touch Sutlej waters which used to feed my fields in Bahawapur Distt British India. Now the same river Sutlej through its feeder canal continues to feed my fields in village Badbar, Distt Barnala, Punjab India. So satisfying! we were extremely contented and thrilled to see and feel this Nature made evolution which does not care for man made boundaries.

Punjab literally means (The Land of) Five waters, refering to the rivers: Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Sutlej, and Beas. All tributaries of the Indus River, The Chenab being the largest

Awesome breakfast at Club Mohindra

On the way to Tattapani, this location is very famous for Film shooting as you can watch the movement of vehicle where the hero and heroine are romancing while singing a song.

This place is called Sunni from where we started rafting for 6 KM up to Tattapani
