“Writer of recensions of the Sikh Scriptures who attained martyrdom fighting the Afghans.
The leadership of the Shaheedi Misl was assigned to Baba Deep Singh who was initiated by Tenth Guru and who also fought in the battles of Banda Singh Bahadur. His name is associated with being one of the greatest Martyrs in the Sikh faith. As an early Saint soldier of the faith he was deep reader of the Sikh scriptures with many recensions of the Guru Granth Sahib and Sri Dasam Granth prepared by him. He was based at Damdama one of the sacred places of the Sikhs but away from the main areas of fighting. This area was notorious as Guru Gobind Singh had visited it and given the designation of a centre of learning-Guru Ki Kashi. Hence why a number of recensions of the Sikh scriptures were produced here with their own unique seal. The Misl was in the thick of all the battles with the Mughals. On many occasions they were outnumbered but their devotion to the Guru overrode any self-importance.
In April 1757, Ahmad Shah Durrani raided Northern India again and desecrated the Harimandir Sahib (Golden Temple). Things came to an ahead, when Deep Singh vowed to protect the holy precincts within Amritsar. Deep Singh died fighting against the Mughals, with his head severed at the precincts of the Harimandir. His smadh stands there now as a testimony for his convictions and rights for freedom.
