Various Dialects of Punjabi language & Maharaja Ranjit Singh


These are different dialects of Punjabi language. The standard Punjabi is Majhi, which is in the central region of the Amritsar and Lahore belt, which is in light yellow color. It is here that Sikh Gurus started their reforms and Sikhism was born. 






















Maharaja Ranjit Singh, popularly known as Sher-e-Punjab or Lion Of Punjab was the first Maharaja of the Sikh Empire, which ruled the Northwest Indian subcontinent in the early half of 19th century.

Maharaja Ranjit Singh established his capital in this area and reigned from Apr 12 1801 to June 27, 1838. Hence the popularity of this Majha dialect is dominant. 

About 100 million Pakistanis are of the Punjabi ethnic group.  Northern Pakistan is basically western Punjab and the majority and bigger area that was separated from India at the time of Partition in 1947.

Most of Pakistanis officially study in Urdu language and use Urdu script.  Punjabi in Arabic script is written and is known as “Shahmukhi”. Where as in India Punjabi script is written in “Gurmukhi”.
